Torquay

A town of wonderful contradictions. The natural beauty of the Bay and the glamour of the private yachts and cafe bars sit alongside a town thats a slave to its location. A holiday destination, needing to meet the demands the paying public place on it but also meet its responsibilities to its local population.

Torquay is a great place to visit for all sorts of reasons. On a sunny day its a mini Monaco, bars and boats creating an enticing backdrop.

But of an evening the town plies a slightly different trade, bars and clubs are the main event for Hen Parties, Stag nights and anyone else in need of a good time. The constant police presence however suggests not everyone always has the good time they set out for. Fights are commonplace, the expected nomality. Alcohol, people and the streets are abused in equal measure.

Torquay has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the country.

Torquay needs the money from the nights out to keep its economy going.

Torquay has a morning after hangover thats more than just a headache.

Torquay, Torquay, Torquay............................................................................

(Please click the Facebook and Twitter links below to send it to all your friends and family, at least this will keep TGV happy).

OoooooH Torquay Oooooooh Torquay
Grew up in a town that was famous as a place
for hen parties.
Noise is always loud, there are sirens all around
and the streets aint clean.
If I can claim it here, I can claim it anywhere
that's what they say.
I wear high heels no tights,
and my bedsit's got no lights,
here in Torbay
Even if it aint all it seems I gotta pocket full of dreams
baby i'm from Torquay.

Concrete jungle, bars have it sown up,
the drinks they get thrown up,
here in Torquay.
These streets will help you get knocked up
at night you get locked up,
here in Torquay, Torquay, Torquay.

Down there on the strand,
watch the fights get out of hand
girls think they're so hard.
Faces made up thick with paste,
see the skirts up round their waste
arses made of lard.
Hail a Polish cab, takes me for a shish kebab
somewhere up in Torre.
Someone's sick tonight
cause the vodka bull got spiked
now they're on the floor
Gonna try and get off my knees
clear this bedsit full of fleas
baby i'm from Torquay

Concrete jungle, bars have it sown up,
the drinks they get thrown up,
here in Torquay.
These streets will help you get knocked up
at night you get locked up,
here in Torquay, Torquay, Torquay.

Parodies were not a problem in 1964

I spoke to EMI twice about the parody (EMI only own 50% of the publishing rights, there were 3 others too) and although they wouldn't give us the licence to get ours on I-Tunes they did say they would leave it on you tube which was huge!!! There are lots of copyrighted material on you tube that is only up there because the owners do not know. The Newport guys took it a bit too far. One million hits no good when it's taken down. LadyV had all of her you tube content removed because we used a song over the top of her first photo shoot, never realised we couldn't do that at the time and it was taken down and her account closed without warning. Lessons to be learnt is not to screw with the big boys but you can ring and talk to them and a happier outcome can be shared by all.

Ive always admired your balls GV.But ive got to be honest sueing SKY is akin to sueing GOD (apart from SKY being real of course). Im worried that one of those Simpsons transits will turn up outside your house in the middle of the night, and we will never see you again.

I'm sure you know the ins and outs of it far more than I do GV. Wonder why they've pulled it from You Tube then. Too much success and fear of being sued??

Agree Col, but no way they will get the licence. Really will eat my hat if they did. Cover versions ok but no parody's (Legal anyway)

Maybe they've managed to get the rights for an official parody and are getting ready for release. Whatever we may think of Sky News for letting us down on the coverage of Torbados, I gotta say the Newport version is pretty clever.

Yes, but tonight they did yet another teams parody!!! I Know we have no chance Hoodie but what the hell lets go out in a blaze of glory. Got a free half hour with a solicitor on Friday, thinking of taking it to a small claims court.

Tue, 10th Aug 2010
I read an interview with the creator. She is from London but claims welsh family links. They trialled lots of placenames before settling on Newport. She said that the reason its been successful is because unlike all the other parodies, it has a positive feel to it and isnt putting anyone down...sniff.

Tue, 10th Aug 2010
Maybe its time to take sky news to the small claims court. Yet another 10 minutes coverage for another newport parody. I know we were not the first but surely our message of teenage pregnancies and binge drinking and the fact that schools have used it for lessons must count for something? I uploaded the original when we first produced it to their web site, I also emailed the post and video link. I also challenged them two weeks ago about why they did not cover Torbados and here tonight they feature another song. Now I realise its all just a bit of fun and I am not taking it too seriously but we deserve our share of coverage unless of course the producer of Sky News is from Newport, then we are doomed! I will try to find out and if he/she is we are going to the small claims court.

Hi Guys, a great song and oh so true. I grew up in Hele village, Torquay (Windmill Ave, before Pendennis) but now live in Syracuse, New York. Most of my family still live in Torquay, and in fact it was my brother, Simon who told me about the video. I was suprised that when I "googled" Torbadous, I found nothing. It was only by going to Colin Reece's website was i able to view a copy of the video.
PS Just about to sit down and watch the England/USA match.

Good stuff Nick and excellent that two blog sites like Noddleit and TalkTorbay are working side by side. Maybe we could give some certain Westminster boys a lesson in coalition. It does beg the question to TGV as to why Noddleit, the creators of Torbados, don't come up at all when you Google it. Apart from a very early embryonic post by Hoodie on the subject and the You Tube page of course, but no guide to the Noddleit posting. No sour grapes Nick just curious.

Like I said to Lady V tis bloody brilliant! Torquay has def hit the map over the last few years, but not necessarily for positive reasons. It is now known for being one of the UK's main destinations for stag and hen wkds, I work in the hotel industry and have seen an increase in single sex bookings within the last year, they cause a lot of negative tension and so far this month I have refunded 5 guests due to the disruption these groups cause. But as long as hotel owners except these bookings they will keep coming, and yes it does drive away regular visitors to the bay without a doubt! That aside Torbay is a lovely place to live, born and bred here I wouldnt live anywhere else, we are very lucky and like DJCrossfade said it is prob the same in every town on a wkd, stay away from the strand on a fri and sat night and it's the perfect place to be! Good luck with the song guys it's gonna be big!!xx

I am not at all surprised by the amount of support for the song as opposed to the amount of negative comments. Firstly it is genius lyrically and in its production and performance. Secondly, IT IS TRUE!!! We obviously are not disputing that Torbay is undoubtedly one of the best places to live in the UK, but that is not the argument. The Three times I have visited Torquay at a weekend I felt uncomfortable on the Strand on the weekend early mornings. Also after reading the comments here and on youtube I don't believe the people who made this video are just singling out Torbay. It is every single town in the UK. Well done guys and LadyV.

Torquay is a wonderful place to live in. The idyllic views and sweet summer breeze gives you the feel of 'holiday'....on a quiet summers day, sitting on the beach at Meadfoot you could be anywhere in the world. No one can take that away from the Bay. This song highlights various issues that are presenting themselves, not just in Torbay but nationwide. Alcohol issues, teenage pregnancy, unemployment (not helped by the current economic climate) and the effects of being a teenager growing up in 2010!

This could create some animosity, but it should also create some debate....what are we as citizens of the bay (or of the UK) going to do about it....here in an election year it can be, and should be a hot topic....as Hoodie says, Torbay has to make its money somehow, and how are the powers that be supporting that?

Go Torbados - let's hope it gets the national coverage it deserves, sparking debate, controversy and ultimately heightens awareness of the issues facing Britain today.

FANTASTIC!! THE BEST VIDEO I HAVE SEEN IN AGES!! Bloody sad for me though because I came to Torquay regularly as a teenager in the late 1950s and it was a stunningly beautiful place! I remember arriving in Torquay on a Saturday after a 15 hour coach drive from Manchester and staying in a guest house in Ellacombe and on the Saturday evening my mum and dad and I would stroll around the harbourside and gaze into all the 'classy' shop windows admiring all the expensive items. No drunken threatening pissheads to be seen anywhere!!

Surely it's young people's thinking and sexual activity that lead us here in the first place-due to lack of discipline and caring by many parents, schools, govt etc! What better way to educate them-highlight how it could be if they're not careful and sensible!

Just to get the facts straight - Torbay does not have highest rate of teenage pregnancies - in fact it is ninth. It has the biggest rise since 1999 - maybe it was just a bad year to start measuring from. And can we be careful about how this may influence young people's thinking & sexual activity.......................love the singer

Hoodie, you know I am a big fan of yours but this is by far the best thing you have produced on this site. Genius. LadyV, you are so so stunning, not only in your looks but your voice also. BigCol excellent work too. I hope the viewers see it for what it is, a comedy song but what a great message at the end of the video! Didn't expect that and made it even better. Glad you are thinking of doing a good one TGV, Torbay is too beautiful to knock and I love visiting even though I refuse to go out on a Saturday because of the very reasons you highlight here.

Complex isnt it, although those of us firing on more than a few synapses will see the irony and genius behind this excellent bit of work, a skit about crown green bowls and saga holidays would probably stop the wealth of bottom feeders that surge into our beautiful county every year because its better to unemployed in Torbay than it is Durham.

Gd point MS - On one hand Tobay will be promoting the visits hen parties and stag nights, knowing that the harbourside economy needs them to survive, but its also got to deal with the aftermath and try and promote sensible drinking - im not saying its an easy task but then I didnt hand out all those bar licences...

I think the amount of thought and work that has gone into this video is amazing. The message at the end is meaningful and necessary. This applies to most places. Personally, my comment about a send up on the positive side means it could be sold to the 'PC' brigade and may get more coverage. I would not like to be thought of as a killjoy, just a thought on more promotion for the site.

I don't think anyone is justified in saying we are slating where we live. From my angle we're just having an affectionate dig, and it's the fact that we do live here that entitles us to do so if we wish. I must admit that if someone from upcountry had posted this I might be questioning their reasons but, as Hoodie says, it's just an exaggerated pop at the hometown, done for comedic effect with a serious message entwined. If you want an upbeat one, suggestions for a suitable melody would be appreciated. Personally I'm thinking along the lines of Dana's "All kinds of Everything" or "I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside". Not really.

I have no idea whether to laugh or cry. It's another genius piece of content from Hoodie and if you do watch the video to the end it is obvious that it is not just about Torquay. Comedy will always come in for critisism though and it would be a shame if that happens here. I have tried numerous times to get the mayor on the site but to no avail. Maybe this will prompt a response from the powers at be. Torquay is still one of the very best places to live in the UK, that goes without saying, and if the council, radio or press offer their support I will write and produce the best pro Torbay song ever that will take the spotlight off Hoodies song here, but for now, let us just accept this post for what it is, a very very clever piece of content that creates a debate, once again Hoodie has proved his worth because this video and song is very clever indeed.

Like Hoodie said, comedy always has a serious message. I think it's pretty brave or you guys to do it though. Maybe the follow up should be upbeat and happy about the joys of Bingo and Coach Trips, dress LadyV up as a happy old lady or would you then get slated for that too. The message at the end of this video makes it obvious it is not about Torquay, just the do-gooders having their twopence worth.

It would be a good idea to appreciate and show the upsides of living here. Maybe the Tourist Board would buy it for their promotions. Come on then guys, get going!!!!

Brilliant folks. As you say Hoodie, the vid made me laugh, but the serious issues could be any town, 'here in Dudley, Dudley, Dudley....'

Well im glad opinions divided, the light hearted lyrics of the song talk around some quite serious issues affecting not just Torquay but many other towns, seaside or not. Yes by using Torquay, it is singling it out, in the same way that comedians often pick on my home town of Croydon, South London - often comedy exaggerates but behind that there is often a truth needing to expressed. Obviously there is much to Torquay other than the Strand. But how is Torquay marketed by those in control ? How is Torquay known Nationwide ? Bus Loads of Hen Parties dont arrive on the off chance. Torquays teenage pregnancy rate doesnt just happen cos the sea air makes you randy. This is just one take on that. Im glad that your all interested - keep em coming.

TGV - i think thats a great idea to creat a Positive song for debate...maybe you could use Sinatra's 'New York New York' backing track - seems the perfect choice.

Don't know if you were around last summer MattTorbay to witness a whole group of people, including those involved with this project, when a free show of the best talent in Torbay was put on in the Princess Gardens to replace the shambles of the cancelled Cockington Proms. Look up a post entitled 'Last Night On the Prom' (the number ref is below) and you'll see the impact it had. You're right there are positive aspects to Torquay as we proved last year.

It's a bit sad really, shame some clearly talented people couldn't use their gifts to create something positive. There's more to Torquay the Strand on a Saturday night, including some of the most stunning natural heritage in the world...I think sometimes people don't actually realise how lucky they are with where they live in the world.

And even if you do want to concentrate on the Strand on a Saturday night, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, "All of us are in the gutter, but some of us are looking towards the stars."

I used to specialise in oohs and aahs when I was younger Foxy, but that's maybe a different story.

Just spoke to Lady V asking her where did she get the backing track with the oohs and aahs and she told me no backing track that was me and BigCol harmonising and double tracking. This just gets better.

This is actually fabulous and so clever! Was out last night and saw a young girl, heavily pregnant, collapsed on the floor with her legs open, throwing up between them - I'd have given her the link to this video and slapped her if I hadn't only just found it! X
