During the gale, much of the fishing fleet of Brixham was destroyed, as well as many other ships from other parts of the country and abroad, reports vary but between 100 and 150 lives were lost. A memorial and mass grave exists in the graveyard at St Marys Church, Brixham
In the aftermarth of the storm, the people of Exeter raised the money for Brixham to have her own lifeboat, and Brixhams first ever RNLI lifeboat, The City Of Exeter, was delivered to the town.
